4. Risk monitoring. How does the firm track risks over time? Level 1: no systematic monitoring. Level 2: periodic manual reviews. Level 3: continuous monitoring with automated indicators and regular reporting. Level 4: real-time monitoring integrated into operational dashboards with automated alerting and escalation.
5. Risk governance. How is the risk program managed? Level 1: no formal structure. Level 2: assigned responsibilities with basic reporting. Level 3: formal governance structure with regular reviews, metrics, and accountability. Level 4: governance integrated into firm leadership with AI risk as a standing agenda item, cross-functional coordination, and strategic alignment.
Data privacy risks. Client data entering AI systems creates privacy exposure. The risk varies by tool: firm-managed tools with local processing versus cloud-based tools that transmit data to third parties. Mitigation requires understanding data flows and addressing privacy gaps before they become breaches.
Output quality risks. AI-generated errors in client deliverables create professional liability. The risk is compounded by AI errors that are plausible and systematic rather than obvious and random. Mitigation requires review processes calibrated to AI error patterns.
Regulatory compliance risks. AI regulations are evolving across jurisdictions. The risk is not just current non-compliance but future regulatory changes that affect existing AI usage. Mitigation requires the proactive compliance approach that builds ahead of regulation.
Vendor dependency risks. Reliance on AI vendors creates operational and strategic risks. Vendor terms change, pricing changes, tools are discontinued, and data handling practices evolve. Mitigation requires workflow-level vendor assessment and portability planning.
Operational continuity risks. AI tool failures or changes can disrupt service delivery. When workflows depend on AI tools, tool unavailability becomes a business continuity issue. Mitigation requires fallback procedures and workflow designs that function without AI tools at reduced efficiency.
For each of the five dimensions, identify which level description best matches the firm's current practice. Be honest — aspirational assessment defeats the purpose. The goal is to identify the actual starting point for improvement.
The firm's effective maturity level is determined by its lowest-scoring dimension. A firm that has Level 3 identification, Level 3 assessment, Level 3 mitigation, Level 2 monitoring, and Level 2 governance operates at Level 2 effectively. Risk management is only as strong as its weakest dimension because an unmonitored risk or ungoverned process can undermine all other risk management efforts.
This assessment should involve people from multiple functions: IT, compliance, operations, and service delivery. Each function sees different aspects of AI risk. A single-function assessment produces a single-perspective view that misses risks visible to other functions.
